About Ashlar House
Ashlar House is a beautifully renovated and restored 3,000 sq. ft. private home and country retreat, owned and cared for by the Sutherns family.
In 1850, Ashlar House began as a limestone farmhouse. Although its driveway used to be the original road through town, Ashlar House is pleasantly hidden away from today’s Main Street in Erin, Ontario. In this historic village, there are still some people who have yet to discover this hidden gem.
You’ll find Ashlar House’s sign at the foot of a long private drive. In any season the towering maples make the entrance spectacular. The stately building is nestled on lush grounds, surrounded by 10 wooded acres of mature forest and walking trails.
Ashlar House has evolved over more than a century-and-a-half at the hands of only a few owners during this time. Respectful of its historic value and beauty, the Sutherns family have undertaken renovations to reflect and preserve the period and character of Ashlar House.
Kitchen cabinetry and furniture have been crafted out of old reclaimed wood, 100-year-old elm wide-plank floors and original baseboards. Limestone countertops and a solid mahogany front door are examples of more modern features that blend seamlessly with the old.
Ashlar House’s namesake is a kind of stone block used in construction. Its meaning signifies a state of progress and growth—and sets the tone for the next chapter in this property’s story.
Destination for Special Events
"The idea for Ashlar House was born out of a desire to maintain the use of the house and property in ways consistent with how we use it when we’re here,” explains owner Rebecca Sutherns. “Lots of warm hospitality, good food, rest and peace, opportunities to meet people and learn new things, support for local farmers and other businesses—all these things and more are really important in our family’s life and business."
Driven by her passion for the home and its environs, Rebecca Sutherns has opened the door to Ashlar House—offering it as a fresh and versatile venue to meet, network, learn, reflect, celebrate and create.
Ashlar House also provides innovative fundraising experiences for charitable organizations in its surrounding communities. It’s also available for private functions and limited vacation rentals.
Reserve Ashlar House for your private occasion…or gather at the House for any of the exciting events we’re hosting next. You’ll find modern amenities steeped in history and casual ambience.

"Ashlar House was the perfect place for our wedding – it is so beautiful and comfortable. We loved having the ability to have different parts of our wedding in different locations around the property – each with its own unique feel – the stone house and patio, the rustic kitchen, the lush lilac garden, the bonfire area – all made our day so unique and special. Rebecca Sutherns and the team from What's Cookin' are incredibly hospitable and professional. Our guests couldn't stop talking about how perfect the setting was, and all just an hour drive from Toronto. Our memories are incredible!"
